LIORA MOSER

"My work explores the crossover between design, engineering and biology – I am a firm believer in the idea that nothing and no-one exists in a vacuum and that exploring these connections is the key to learning and advancing. The inspiration for these pieces stems from the sea urchin: a deceivingly simple, prehistoric organism that has existed for 450 million years, 220 million years before dinosaurs, and today lives in every ocean at every depth. I became fascinated with their inner workings, especially their water vascular system which allows them to walk by pumping water through their tube feet, expanding and contracting them. I started exploring the applicability of this hydraulic system to current modern technology and the potential of renewable energy sources. Nature is the greatest sculptor, and it is humbling to see how many organisms have possessed processes since the beginning of time which we are only now discovering and making proper use of. I decided to devolve back to, and learn from, the starting points of evolution and learned the importance of not underestimating things that don’t pertain to the human brain – devolving to evolve.

Energy, structure and applicability are the focal points of these pieces - Exploring electricity and air flow, texture and visuals; a multi-sensory experience for the viewer that brings them to the present and encourages interaction and exploration, sparking a conversation and allowing them to learn from the organism, just as I did."
