ELISHA CANDLIN

"A brief from last year asked us to create a publication surrounding a found object and that also links to the theme of sustainability. In response to the brief, I chose to create a small zine named, “Confessions from a Collector”, showcasing a plethora of mundane objects that are significant in my life through illustrating them in my art style. Instead of focusing on a particular ‘found object’, looking at many allowed me to expand on the idea of having attachment towards objects and that there is beauty and comfort in the mundane. The artist Michael Landy who I researched explained how “It is a very human characteristic to possess things,” “Having things, creating things – that’s partly what makes us human”. It is an interesting theme that I wanted to communicate - the main purpose is to allow the reader to reflect and think about their own ‘comfort objects’, what about them brings joy? What memories do they evoke? What makes them a part of our identity?"
